So I Planted a Tree

By

Killeen has grown so fast, and with a lot of new construction, some neighborhoods haven’t fully grown into themselves. My neighborhood is that way, so I planted a tree on Saturday. Also, I checked out a satellite image of my neighborhood from before the homes were built, and it was farm land. In other words: it wasn’t a forest.

After consulting with the Nursery I went with a Live Oak because they do well in the Central Texas heat. There is no sense in forcing something to happen that isn’t natural.

I was thinking though, it is kind of funny that when it comes to people, Killeen is more hospitable. People come here from all corners of the nation and even the world. They plant their roots here, and in many cases, they flourish.

That’s a lot different than some places I have lived (one in particular comes to mind). Sometimes communities become self-indulgent, or at least stuck in their ways. When newcomers arrive, they don’t know how to deal with them. If a tornado came through town, there would only be so much room in the storm shelter, if you know what I mean.

Killeen has its quirks, but when it comes to newcomers, there is no preset definition of what it means to be from Killeen.

If you have a second, check out a video the Chamber produced on diversity.
