Downtown Killeen Farmer’s Market

By

Farmers’s markets are one of my favorite things about summer and after a little research I found some right here in the Killeen area. Farmers are notorious for getting up early and I am not a morning person, so the farmer’s markets in Temple and Belton, which begin at 7am, most likely will never get my business. But the Killeen Area Grower’s Association made their schedule with people like me in mind. At the corner of South Park Street and Avenue G every Tuesday and Friday (May through September) from 3-6pm farmers are selling their goods. So I drove downtown to check out the farmer’s market…but almost kept driving right on past. The “market” had only 2 guys with their tables set up on a sad, low traffic corner. I went around the block once and decided if I drove here I might as well get out and see what was going on, and I am glad I did! The farmer’s market doesn’t look like much, but I went home with bags full of goodies and a big smile! These guys are great fun and have great food. I picked up a dozen fresh eggs ($3) and a basil plant ($2) along with a big bag of banana peppers ($2), 3 green peppers ($2) and a big bag of onions ($2). One of my farmer friends threw in 2 baby red onions for me to try, and they promised they would have tomatoes the next time I came by and fruit later in the summer!

What this market lacked in curb appeal it certainly made up for in quality and selection. I am used to farmer’s markets in which each stall has only one or two items, kind of a specialty farmer, but these guys have it all and they have more coming every week! I am looking forward to many more afternoons of fresh food at the Killeen farmer’s market.
